New At Home Spa Treatments Designed To Save Money

Reporting Kirstin Cole NEW YORK (CBS) ― When both a gallon of gas and a gallon of milk each costs more than $4, life's little luxuries, like facials and pedicures, seem too costly.

But now, new products on the market can bring these professional spa treatments to you, at home, for a lot less.

You can get a mani and a pedi for $20, or a facial or microdermabrasion for at least $100. But having those treatments in the privacy of your own home, at fraction of the cost, is priceless.

"Sometimes starting with a professional treatment is the way to go and then you do the at home treatments for maintenance," said Cheryl Kramer Kaye, beauty editor for Redbook.

In 2005, Americans spent nearly $10 billion at spas. Now, though, we're all tightening our economic belts and new "at home spa treatments" that mimic the real deal are all the rage.

First, the Nu Skin Galvanic System uses energy pulses to push the product deeper into the skin, scalp or even body for cellulite reduction.

"Galvanic spa system is going to push those peptides deeper into your skin for better results," Kaye said.

And forget $400 for just one laser hair removal treatment. Meet the "no-no" hair remover that cuts hair off and more.

"It sends a signal to the root that says we don't need you anymore," said Kaye.

The results after 12 weeks? According to Kaye, you're supposed to have 64 percent less hair re-growth.

And running a facial every time you have a breakout can get pricey. Now there's Thermaclear that zaps pimples with heat and promises to cure them in half the time.

And if it's your feet that are in need of a little TLC, take a look at how well the Ped Egg works.

"It's basically like a cheese grater for your feet," said Kaye.

"It's almost like comparing the difference between a Shirley Temple to a martini," said Dr. Eric Siegel.

Siegel said home devices can never fully replicate an in-office treatment.

"Our strongest lasers only work about 50 percent. These products might give you a 10 percent improvement maximum," Siegel said.

There are also a number of at home microdermabrasion products that claim to gently resurface your skin's texture and improve skin tone.
