Oily fish may boost prostate cancer survival rate: Study

Chavarro and his co-workers used data from the Physician's Health Study. Over 20,000 men were followed for 382,144 person-years of follow-up, during which time 2,161 cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed and 230 deaths from the disease recorded. All of the men were free of the disease at the start of the study in 1983.

Both high fish and seafood omega-3 fatty acid intakes were associated with significant reductions in the risk of prostate cancer death men, compared to men with lower consumptions.

"These results suggest that fish intake is unrelated to prostate cancer incidence but may improve prostate cancer survival," concluded the researchers.

I seem to remember Dr De Villa say that omega-3 does indeed help his cancer patients in one of his talks. But how can one get the best amount of omega-3? The answer: in supplements.

Omega-3 may be better suited to supplements

Consumers are not sure whether they are gaining enough omega-3 from functional foods, says Mintel, and the ingredient could be best suited to dietary supplements after all.

"One of the issues that often crops up with some fortification ingredients is that consumers are not sure if they are getting enough, how much they should be getting, and if what they are eating and drinking supplies enough," said David Jago, director of innovation and Insight at Mintel GNPD.

"As consumers want more proof of what they are eating and what it is doing for them, we think that some supplement ingredients, such as omega-3, may move more strongly into dietary supplements rather than into food and beverage, as a way to answer those consumer concerns."

When you eat supposedly omega-3 rich food like fish or omega-3 fortified food, you never know how much you are really taking in. You don't know for sure if you are getting the right amount. That is why it is better to get your omega-3 in supplement form.

Pure juices can reduce disease risk, says review

Pure fruit and vegetable juices are generally regarded as healthy, despite containing less fibre than the whole fruit. A review of studies into their potential to reduce risk of chronic disease may serve to validate the popular perception and give more leverage in the functional drinks category.

According to a recent survey by the UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, consumption of fruit juice in the country rose 24 per cent last year to 366ml per person per week as people plump for healthier alternatives to sugar-laden fizzy drinks.

But some regulators have considered juices to be less healthy than whole fruit and vegetables, an opinion that is transmitted in consumption advice. For instance, while the UK's Food Standards Agency recommends five portions of fruit and vegetables per day, juice may only be counted as one of these, no matter how much is drunk.

Likewise the US Department of Agriculture says that juice is "generally less desirable because it has less fibre".

However the review of 11 studies, conducted by UK researchers and published in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition last year, concluded that the cancer and cardiovascular benefits may be more attributable to antioxidants rather than fibre.

They say that the view that pure fruit and vegetable juices are nutritionally inferior to fruit and vegetables, in relation to chronic disease risk reduction, is not justified.

TeGreen Homerun! Nutraingredients.com: "Mechanism For Green Tea's Anti-Cancer Action Revealed"

Pharmanex’ Tegreen97 has been at the forefront of many of the Green Tea discoveries. Now the research is catching on fire. On the company site, Pharmanex says, “Tegreen97 is an exclusive preparation of green tea leaf extract standardized to 97 percent polyphenols, the highest in the industry. Tegreen97 contains the same polyphenol content of approximately seven cups of traditionally brewed green tea. Don’t miss the “key scientific study” reference at the bottom of this (in red), from the Px Product Info Page on Tegreen. (And remember that Tegreen ingredients are included in LifePak, although at less than $18.00 per bottle RETAIL, I’m beginning to think Tegreen by itself is grossly underpriced.)

Two Authorized Studies Proved Again The Extraordinary Benefits on Pharmanex ReishiMax GLP

Two Authorized Studies Proved Again
The Extraordinary Benefits on Pharmanex ReishiMax GLP

In recent months, new and exciting research has been published in the area of cancer prevention and treatment with Ganoderma lucidum (reishi).

In a recently published study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary
Medicine, the biological activity of several reishi supplements, including Pharmanex ReishiMax GLP were compared to determine their ability to inhibit certain factors of highly invasive breast and prostate cancer cells. The study found the most potent inhibition against breast and prostate cancer cell proliferation in ReishiMax GLP. The article states, "Interestingly, the sample containing powdered extract with spores (ReishiMax GLP) was the most potent in inhibiting migration (99%)." The authors also noted that ReishiMax GLP was the only reishi product to identify standardized active constituents, and suggested that, "the difference in potency to inhibit cancer cells of the different samples of Ganoderma lucidum can be the result of variation in the concentration of the active ingredients."Lastly, the authors showed that cracking spores by mechanistic disruption (as with ReishiMax GLP), increased activity by releasing biologically active components.

A second study using ReishiMax GLP was just published in the Journal of Cancer Integrative Medicine. The authors concluded that Ganoderma lucidum might contribute to reducing invasion and metastasis of breast cancers by inhibiting cancer cell adhesion, cell migration, and growth of cancer cells. The study also showed that Ganoderma lucidum could have preventive effects against secondary metastases, which are responsible for the high mortality of breast cancer.
